When is it Time to Replace?

Most of the time, your furnace will let off warning signs to let you know it is nearing the end of its life. Some of the warning signs include:

  • Age—Most furnaces have a life expectancy between 15 and 20 years. If your furnace is more than 15 years old, it may be time to replace it.
  • Increasingly high energy bills—If your energy bills keep increasing, even though your usage has remained constant, it could mean your furnace is losing its functions.
  • Frequent repairs—If you have had to repair your furnace frequently over the past two years, it may be more cost-efficient to replace it.
  • Pilot light is yellow—Your pilot light should be blue, and if the flame is yellow, it often means that your furnace is producing carbon monoxide.
  • Inconsistent heating/no heat—As your furnace ages, it may not be able to heat your home as well as it once could.
  • Strange noises—Popping, banging, or whining noises could mean that your furnace is close to the end of its life.

Note: These signs don’t necessarily mean that a replacement is necessary. In some cases, a simple repair will do the trick. One of our HVAC experts will be able to determine which approach is best for your individual situation.
